What stops people from working in open employment?

There are many things that stop people with intellectual disability from working in open employment.

One major barrier is that many people think that people with intellectual disability can’t work. However, research shows that people with intellectual disability can work in open employment. They just need the right supports and training.

Other barriers can include:

  • parents and supporters often having low expectations
  • a lack of support for employers
  • government and workplace policies
  • a lack of supports to help customise and do a job.

A lack of information also means people with intellectual disability and their families often think their only option after school is to work in an Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE) or go to a day program. This stops many people with intellectual disability from trying to enter open employment.
